Awards
KVMA 2010-2011 Award Winners Honored
The KVMA honored veterinarians, a spouse, a long time friend of the profession, and a canine patient at its annual meeting on June 7 in Manhattan.
Veterinarian of the Year
Dr. Ken Burton, Manhattan, was named 2010 KVMA Veterinarian of the Year. Award presenter Dr. Jon Nelson cited generosity, compassion, graciousness, integrity, and trust displayed by Dr. Burton toward Dr. Nelson and his daughter when their family car broke down in Lyons, Kansas.

Spouse of the Year
The 2010 KVMA Spouse of the Year is Brenda Cowan. Mrs. Cowan works at East Douglas Veterinary Clinic, Wichita, and has been involved in a number of projects and positions with the KVMA Auxiliary in recent years.

Distinguished Service
George Teagarden was honored with the 2010 KVMA Distinguished Service Award. Teagarden retired as Kansas Livestock Commissioner and head of the Kansas Animal Health Department in May. The Kansas foreign animal disease (FAD) plan and the Kansas Voluntary Veterinary Corps are two of the innovations during his tenure.

Pet of the Year
Stillman “Stilly”, a 13 year old golden retriever, was honored as 2010 KVMA Companion Pet of the Year. Stilly has spent his life nurturing traumatized and abused children for his owner, a licensed social worker and family therapist. He has been recognized in professional journals and animal care magazines. Stilly is a patient at Chislhom Trail Animal Hospital, Wichita.

Life Time Service
The 2010 KVMA Lifetime Service Award went to Dr. William Skaer. Dr. Skaer, Skaer Veterinary Clinic,Wichita, has focused on the relationship between veterinary medicine, human physical and emotional health, and biodiversity in a career spanning 40 years.

KSU Distinguished Service
Dr. Dick Hesse, director of diagnostic virology at the KSU veterinary diagnostic laboratory, received the KVMA 2010 KSU Distinguished Award. Dr. Hesse earned the honor by combining excellence in veterinary virology with a sustained commitment to serving veterinary practitioners.

President's Award
Gary Reser, executive vice president of the KVMA, Topeka, was honored as the recipient of the 2010 KVMA President’s Award. Reser has been the chief staff executive at the KVMA office for 14 years, representing the profession in the legislative, regulatory, educational, and communications arenas.

Past President's Award
Dr. Cindy Payne-Robertson was recognized for her service as the 2009-2010 KVMA president by being presented the KVMA Past President’s Award.
